Vocabulary Noesis Survey

Before commencement radicals amongst my Algebra 1 students, I had my students consummate a Vocabulary Knowledge Rating Chart.  I created a mass type foldable amongst iii of these (identical) charts for my students to gum inwards their interactive notebooks.  This was my initiative off stance to seek out from Styles too Strategies for Teaching High School Mathematics. 

I chose the xiii most of import vocabulary words to know for our unit.  For each vocabulary term, students had to circle 1, 2, 3, or 4.  1 stands for "I've never heard of the term."  two agency "I've seen or heard of this term before."  An respond of 3 represents "I retrieve I know this term."  And, four agency "I know the term too tin explicate it."

I had students fill upward out this nautical chart for the initiative off fourth dimension earlier I taught anything related to radicals.  Students circled the numbers that reflected their electrical flow score of understanding.  Some of my students were a niggling frustrated amongst this action because they didn't know what whatever of these words meant.  I explained that this was okay because nosotros hadn't started the unit of measurement yet.  Students hence added upward all of the circled numbers to brand it at their "Vocabulary Knowledge Rating."   

I did bring a lot of faux four ratings on the term "index."  They were surprised to uncovering out that I wasn't referring to the dorsum of a non-fiction book.  One cast equally good had an interesting ground over whether the index was the same equally the tabular array of contents.

Several days into the unit, nosotros repeated this activity.  It was exciting to run across students realize how much their Vocabulary Knowledge Rating had increased over only a few days.  Instead of mainly circling 1s too 2s, students were know circling 3s too fifty-fifty or hence 4s.  This was a big confidence booster for my students.  Also, students were curious virtually when nosotros would piece of occupation out to the few price nosotros had non nevertheless covered inwards our unit.

I ran out of time, too I never did bring my students consummate the final survey.  But, I'm glad I did this activity.  It boosted my students' confidence, too it inspired a lot of corking questions.  I definitely desire to occasionally contain this into my classroom i time again adjacent year.  I don't know if it something that would hold upward beneficial to produce for every unit of measurement though.
