Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine's Day.  I told my students that I had wanted to larn them each a Valentine.  But, I went to Wal-Mart, together with they didn't convey whatsoever mathematical valentines.  So, I handed each of my students a strip of colored paper.  I told them that I however got them a Valentine; in that place was only to a greater extent than or less assembly required.

Without telling them what nosotros were doing, I instructed them to cutting their strip of newspaper inwards half.  We folded each strip into a mobius strip, i twisted to the correct together with i twisted to the left.  Then, nosotros glued the ii mobius strips together together with hence they were perpendicular to i another.  Right when my students were genuinely starting to wonder what nosotros were making, I forced them to educate their mobius strips aside to allow the mucilage dry.  I genuinely enjoyed getting to innovate my students to the concept of a mobius strip.  Only i educatee had heard of a mobius strip before.  And, she solely remembered it from Vi Hart's Hexaflexagon video.

My Algebra 1 students spent the bird menstruum reviewing how to graph absolute value equations, finding gradient from a table, together with measures of primal tendency.  Then, nosotros started looking at to a greater extent than intelligence problems together equally a class.  I chose EOI do problems that required to a greater extent than critical thinking skills than detail Algebra 1 skills.  I am trying to reveal my students to equally many dissimilar work types equally possible earlier the EOI inwards April.

Of course, my students did non desire to produce whatsoever math today.  They tried every kind of means possible to convince me that in that place was no argue to produce schoolhouse operate on Valentine's Day.  Once nosotros got started amongst the intelligence problems, I intend they genuinely enjoyed themselves.  We had to a greater extent than or less keen discussions piece trying to tally scenarios amongst graphs.  I intend I'm going to endeavor to respect to a greater extent than or less fourth dimension to fit Dan Meyer's Graphing Stories into my curriculum.

During the concluding 5 minutes of class, nosotros finished our mystery valentines.  I instructed the students to cutting both of their mobius strips inwards half.  The students were hesitant to produce so.  They were convinced if they cutting through the sections that had been glued that it would autumn apart.  I assured them that I knew what I was doing.  And, inwards the end, they were pleasantly surprised to respect ii interlocking hearts.  It was a lot of fun doing this brusk action amongst my students.  Plus, mobius strips are mathematical.  And, nosotros discussed mathematical damage such equally "perpendicular."

Inter-locking Mobius Strip Hearts.
This i isn't the prettiest, but it was the solely i that was left behind inwards my classroom.
