Math + Fine Art = A Beautiful Thing

Happy Monday!

After over xiii hours at schoolhouse today, I'm happy that Mon is close over!  We had parent/teacher conferences this eve from 3:30-6:30, in addition to we'll do the same tomorrow night.  That makes for a real long day, but I approximate nosotros do exit of schoolhouse on Fri to brand upward for it.  Of course, that way my Pi Day celebration has been thrown off i time again.  One day, I volition genuinely celebrate Pi Day amongst my students on Pi Day!

Spring Break is coming, though!  3 to a greater extent than days.  1 blood drive.  1 to a greater extent than black of parent/teacher conferences.  1 STEM Day Engineering in addition to Math Contest.  Yup.  It's going to live on a busy, busy week!  I approximate it volition simply brand Spring Break that much to a greater extent than sweet...

My New Desk Decoration - Pencil (or Highlighter) Holder
In other news, I got a novel desk ornamentation that I haven't been able to conduct maintain my eyes off of today.  It's beautiful, it's mathematical, in addition to it's courtesy of my amazing, artistic sister.  She made this concluding semester equally i of her pottery projects.  Then, she fired it in addition to glazed it.  I LOVE it!  It fits my personality perfectly.  And, it definitely reminds me of Frankoma Pottery.

Each of the 4 sides features a dissimilar mathematical symbol.

The Imaginary Number, i
Today, I had a pupil remain to consummate about missing assignments during parent/teacher conference time.  This student's sister, a seventh grader, was stuck inwards my room for 2+ hours.  She looked at all my posters, played amongst my diverse mathematical toys, in addition to spent a practiced chunk of fourth dimension trying to solve my Rubik's cube.  One of the start out matter that caught her optic was my novel pencil/highlighter holder.  Oooh!  That's the pi symbol.  And, it has a foursquare origin symbol on this side.  And, this way infinity.  Then, she got to the side featuring i.  What is this?  Her blood brother chop-chop piped upward that i is the foursquare origin of negative one.  I could run across the wheels within her caput turning equally she tried to figure out the foursquare origin of negative one.  That's negative one, right?  What's negative i times negative one?  Positive one.  So, that way negative i cannot live on the foursquare origin of negative one.  The adjacent matter I know, her blood brother in addition to I are discussing where i would live on on the number line.  These are the types of conversations that I LOVE!

Pi Symbol
We discussed the number pi in addition to how it goes on forever.  I conduct maintain issued a challenge to my students to memorize equally many digits of pi equally possible for our early on Pi Day celebration on Wednesday.  Today, I handed out slips of newspaper to my students amongst the start out grand digits of pi.  One pupil at i time asked, "Where's the pattern?"  There is no pattern.  Pi never repeats.  That's why it's irrational.  "Oh man!  That was how I was going to win.  I was simply going to memorize upward until the signal that it started repeating..."

A Radical Symbol
Art that sparks mathematical conversations?  Yeah, I'll conduct maintain that whatsoever day!
