Reviewing 1 Variable Inequalities

On Friday, my Algebra 1 students started to review inequalities.  It was together with thus refreshing to run into them realize that this was something they had studied final twelvemonth inward eighth grade.  A few students mentioned that they had never figured out how to create these problems final year, together with they asked lots of awesome questions.

Including the "not equal to" symbol provided all of my students alongside a challenge since that's something they most definitely did non run into inward eighth degree math.  Seeing calorie-free bulbs larn off every bit they realized that nosotros would demand to shade BOTH ways was priceless!

We did a quick foldable that I created together with blogged well-nigh dorsum inward 2013.  This is ane of the few foldables that I look to role twelvemonth afterwards twelvemonth afterwards twelvemonth without editing it.

I possess got a dissimilar pupil volunteer to brand an instance disputation for each symbol for us to graph on our publish lines.  Most kiddos similar to selection a variable that corresponds alongside the starting fourth dimension alphabetic character of their name.

After reviewing the diverse inequality symbols together with discussing how to graph them, nosotros did the "Toe the Line" investigation from Discovering Algebra.  I institute this investigation on page 17 of this PDF.

I used the snipping tool on my figurer to cutting out the tabular array together with glue it inward a Publisher file to brand an interactive notebook page.

With my starting fourth dimension period, I had 2 students stand upwardly inward forepart of the appropriate places of my publish line together with walk through the activity.  It went TERRIBLY.  (On a happy note, yous tin notice out to a greater extent than well-nigh my classroom decorations here.)

With my side past times side 2 classes, I had them role their imagination to pretend at that topographic point are 2 people walking along the publish line.  This worked SO much better!  In both classes, ane pupil told the class that the symbol was ever going to move "less than."  With each occupation on the table, they became to a greater extent than together with to a greater extent than adamant that it was ever "less than."  After writing vii less than symbols inward a row, they were fifty-fifty to a greater extent than convinced.  Then, nosotros multiplied both sides of the inequality past times a negative number, together with at that topographic point were audible gasps inward the room.

I made my students possess got their marking or highlighter together with circle each of the steps that made the inequality symbol change.  Some of my students claimed that multiplying together with dividing is what changed the symbol.  Other students recognized the demand for multiplying or dividing past times a NEGATIVE number.

The ane work I possess got alongside this action is that it never asked my students to split past times a positive number.  This action is a definite keeper, but I desire to brand my ain tabular array for side past times side year.  I'm disappointed that it worked amend every bit a sit down together with write action than a larn upwardly together with motion around activity.

The final affair I did alongside my students to review inequalities was to run a quick session of "Graphs of Inequalities Speed Dating."  It was together with thus difficult to set these dark boxes on my precious students' faces because they were all smiling.  They were doing math AND enjoying it!

I wishing I had files for this action to share, but I don't because they are merely handwritten on index cards.  The forepart of each carte has the graph of an inequality.  The dorsum of the carte has the inequlaity written inward words.  For example, the dorsum of the carte powerfulness state "x is greater than or equal to 7."  This lets students

Tomorrow, we'll move starting to write our ain inequalities based on even out problems.  It'll move interesting to run into how that goes!
