The Probability Game Without A Name

After my eighth graders finished their solid reason testing, my cooperating instructor too I decided to excogitation a mini-unit on probability.  Probability is an eighth degree math touchstone inwards Oklahoma, but it is non tested past times the state.

To endure clear, I did non brand upwards this game.  I discovered this probability game a few weeks agone on a (new to me) blog, Walking inwards Mathland.  There, the game is referred to equally Beano.  And, each pupil is given twelve dried beans to play with.  Knowing my middle schoolhouse students, I decided that I didn't desire to take heed jokes all solar daytime long almost the cite of the game.  And, I could only flick students rainfall down dried beans at ane another.

So, I modified the game to endure played amongst twelve small-scale game pieces.  I had a purse of small-scale washers that made perfect game pieces, but whatsoever small-scale object could endure substituted.  Each pupil volition demand twelve game pieces.

Rules of the Game

1.  Place your twelve pieces on the game board.  You may house all your pieces on ane rectangle or spread them out withal you lot wish.

2.  Roll ii dice.  Find the sum.

3.  If you lot had a playing slice on the amount rolled, you lot may take away ane playing piece.

4.  Continue rolling the die too removing playing pieces ane at a fourth dimension until ane mortal empties their board.

The Lesson
eighth Grade Pre-Algebra (50 infinitesimal shape period)

Step 1:  Hand out game boards too playing pieces.  Instruct students to house their playing pieces on the board.  Go over basic rules.

Step 2:  Jump guide into the origin game.  I used the "Multiple Dice" characteristic from the Smart Notebook Gallery.  Students volition presently realize that their strategy for placing their pieces could endure revised.  Once a mortal has won, instruct students to intend almost their strategy for placing their game pieces.  Remind them that this is a game of probability.

Step 3:  Play the instant round.

Step 4:  Next, I told my students that I wanted to attention them win this game.  I handed out the worksheet posted on Walking inwards Mathland.  Of course, I modified it slightly since nosotros weren't playing amongst beans.  Students completed the nautical chart at the overstep scream for them to listing all of the possible sums that lawsuit from rolling ii dice.

Step 5:  Tell students to role this nautical chart to attention them house their game pieces for the tertiary round.  Play the tertiary round.

Step 6:  Have students consummate the bottom one-half of the worksheet.  The instructions say to exercise a bar graph, but I had students inquire if they could exercise other types of graphs.  Of course!  We had a brusk conversation almost what types of information displays would endure appropriate (another eighth degree math standard!).  So, I ended upwards having students exercise bar graphs, business plots, too scatter plots.

Step 7:  Play again.  By now, students start to realize that a winning strategy is to house their game pieces inwards a like mode to the graph they created.

Step 8:  Have students response the four questions provided on the dorsum of the worksheet.

Step 9:  Continue playing equally fourth dimension allows.

My students actually enjoyed this game.  It was actually a fun sense to sentry them educate strategies for winning the game.  I had ane pupil whose initial strategy was to house all of his twelve playing pieces on the break 12.  He presently realized that the break 12 didn't seem much inwards the game.  We had lots of opportunities to speak almost the probability behind the game.  We discussed the differences betwixt theoretical too experimental probability.  The students were fully engaged inwards the activity.
