Surprise! A Bat?!?

Teaching is amount of surprises.  My kids are e'er keeping me on my toes.  They're non e'er to blame, though.

For those of you lot who don't know, Drumright is a blast town.  Oil was hitting inward 1912, in addition to the town was born.  The high schoolhouse I instruct at opened its doors inward 1919!  Recently, our local historical gild posted a motion painting of the schoolhouse from 1919 on their facebook page.  I decided to accept my ain picture, simply to compare.

Here's my school, shortly later it was opened.  My classroom is the closest classroom to you lot on the instant flooring on your left.

Why am I showing you lot pictures of the edifice I operate in?  I'm hoping it volition explicate what I'm nigh to demo you.  Remember how I said pedagogy is amount of surprises?  Old buildings are peculiarly amount of surprises!

I had 1 of those experiences today.  I was sitting at my desk, grading papers.  It was late, in addition to I was getting cook to caput home.  The history instructor from across the hall came over to say me something.  I stood up, in addition to my eyes were drawn to a stain on the carpet.  Except, it wasn't a stain.  It was something that was alive.  It was a BAT!!!

Now, I've known that my schoolhouse had bats since I started working here.  When the counselor gave me keys to my room, she warned me to beware of the bats that lived inward the school.  Twenty-one months later hearing nigh the bats for the start time, I lastly saw one.  In my classroom!

A Bat In My Classroom
This is non okay.  Bats create non belong inward my classroom.  They belong inward caves.  I mean value the exclusively fourth dimension I've genuinely ever seen a bat inward existent life earlier was inward Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City inward Branson, MO.

Thankfully, the history instructor stepped into action.  He got a broom, in addition to used it to poke the bat.  Nothing happened, though.  It simply continued laying there.  I know the bat isn't dead, because it moves its caput every in 1 lawsuit inward a while.  I mean value that it may live sick and/or dying.  Why else wouldn't it motion when it got poked past times a broom?  I also know that I create non desire to larn fight in addition to receive got to become larn a rabies shot!

I left my door open.  We'll meet if the bat is even in addition to thence at that spot inward the morning.  I'm hoping that he volition receive got disappeared past times morning.  If not, I'll definitely live roofing him alongside a bucket or trash tin until the custodian or anybody but me tin come upward in addition to carry it from my classroom.

I simply don't sympathize why the bat had to selection my room.  The calorie-free was on when it came in.  Don't bats similar the dark?  As I wrote on facebook, my instructor training courses didn't instruct me how to bargain alongside a scenario similar this.  Our faculty handbook doesn't receive got a physical care for for bat removal.  I'm inward uncharted territory here.  Oh, the things they don't instruct you lot inward college...

Don't worry.  I'll hold you lot updated on the bat saga!  We'll receive got to meet what tomorrow brings...
