Volume 4: Japanese Logic Puzzles For The Secondary Math Classroom

This is the final installment (at to the lowest degree for now) of a spider web log serial near logic puzzles created yesteryear Naoki Inaba (creator of the expanse maze puzzle I blogged about here) that tin endure used inward the secondary math classroom.  Today's puzzle gear upwards has a lot to offering for the uncomplicated classroom equally well!

Naoki Inaba has published hundreds of logic puzzles for gratis on his website, inabapuzzle.com.  Of course, all of the puzzles are published inward Japanese.  This is my endeavor to brand them to a greater extent than accessible to math teachers because they demo potential for swell applications inward the math classroom.

I don't know Japanese, but I adore logic puzzles.  I peculiarly dear logic puzzles that accept math-y applications in addition to roots.  These definitely do.  You'll accept to excuse my most probable pitiable translations.  If yous encounter something I missed, delight lave a comment!

Here are the rules:

1.  I'll postal service a motion painting of a puzzle in addition to the solution.  The instructions are inward Japanese.
2.  Determine the destination of the puzzle.
3.  Figure out how yous could role it inward your math classroom.
4.  Scroll downward in addition to encounter if your thoughts tally mine!

(Puzzles 1-3 are constitute in Volume 1.  Puzzles 4-6 are constitute in Volume 2.  Puzzles 7-9 are constitute inward Volume 3.)

Puzzle 10:

These are much to a greater extent than elementary-looking puzzles, but I mean value they'd even in addition to then brand swell warm-ups or brain-breaks inward the secondary classroom.

The numbers in addition to arrows say yous that at that topographic point is a specific issue inward that row or column.  In the representative of the five, it's clear what issue MUST larn inward that box.  With the three, nosotros know it can't larn inward the exceed box because 3 + 5 does non equal a 2-digit number.  Therefore, it must larn inward the bottom box.  There's in addition to then much math in addition to logic going on.  I dear it!

If yous dear them to, you'll discovery 42 of these puzzles inward this PDF file.  Solutions are here.

Puzzle 11:

Inaba calls this puzzle "Zero."  Google Translate changes the Japanese to "Zero Zero Formula."

Do yous encounter what I see?  It's a house value puzzle!  You tin entirely add together zeros to each issue inward guild to brand them total to the provided number.

This PDF file contains 49 of these puzzles in addition to gets progressively harder.  Solutions are here.

Puzzle 12:

Inaba calls this a "Step" puzzle.  Google Translate switches the Japanese to "Stairs of the Numbers."

Each business represents a dissimilar arithmetics sequence.  1, 2, 3 is going upwards yesteryear 1.  1, 3, 5 is going upwards yesteryear 2.  And, 2, 5, 8 is going upwards yesteryear 3.  The fact that they are overlapping but makes it fifty-fifty to a greater extent than fun. :)

This PDF file contains 42 of these puzzles amongst solutions posted here.

In Oklahoma, arithmetics sequences are similar a shot an Algebra i touchstone instead of an Algebra ii standard.  I'll definitely role some of these puzzles equally an intro into sequences.
