Volume 2: Japanese Logic Puzzles For The Secondary Math Classroom

This is a continuation of a spider web log serial most logic puzzles created yesteryear Naoki Inaba (creator of the surface area maze puzzle I blogged most here) that tin live on used inward the secondary math classroom.  Actually, I run into lots of applications to the uncomplicated math classroom inward today's laid of puzzles, too.  Volume 1 of the puzzles tin live on flora here.

Naoki Inaba has published hundreds of logic puzzles for costless on his website, inabapuzzle.com.  Of course, all of the puzzles are published inward Japanese.  This is my test to brand them to a greater extent than accessible to math teachers because they demo potential for slap-up applications inward the math classroom.

I don't know Japanese, simply I adore logic puzzles.  I specially honey logic puzzles that conduct maintain math-y applications as well as roots.  These definitely do.  You'll conduct maintain to excuse my most probable pitiable translations.  If yous run into something I missed, delight lave a comment!

Here are the rules:

1.  I'll postal service a motion-picture demo of a puzzle as well as the solution.  The instructions are inward Japanese.
2.  Determine the destination of the puzzle.
3.  Figure out how yous could purpose it inward your math classroom.
4.  Scroll downward as well as run into if your thoughts agree mine!

(Puzzles 1-3 are flora inward Volume 1.)

Puzzle 4:

Inaba calls this puzzle "B-Cross." Google Translate translates the Japanese every bit "Multiple Cross."

From what I tin tell, this is a puzzle to exercise factors as well as multiples.  8 is a cistron of 96.  3 is a cistron of 9.  13 is a cistron of 65.

This PDF file contains 42 of these puzzles.  The puzzles make from having 2-4 cells to fill upwards in.  Solutions are found here.

These would live on slap-up inward whatever unit of measurement that deals amongst factors or multiples.  You could also easily seat upwards ane of these every bit a do-now.

Puzzle 5:

Inaba calls these "Blink" puzzles. Google Translate changes the Japanese to "Multiple Link."

This is to a greater extent than or less other puzzle that deals amongst factors as well as multiples.  5 points to both 10 as well as twenty inward the solution, as well as five is a cistron of both 10 as well as 20.  4 points to 20, as well as iv is a cistron of 20.  The numbers yous tin select from to seat inward each box are listed below.  The issue that has already been placed inward the puzzle has a banking concern check score inward a higher house it.

This PDF file has 42 of these puzzles to solve.  Here are solutions, too.

Like pretty much all of the puzzles on this page, this would brand a slap-up warm-up or encephalon break.

Puzzle 6:

Inaba calls this puzzle "Mizu."  Google Translates changes the Japanese to "water as well as thus to water."  Yeah...

These are fraction puzzles, as well as I ADORE them!  Seriously, I printed them off as well as move through all simply the end page of them amongst a pinkish highlighter.  Each pocket-size box counts every bit a unmarried unit, 1.  The arrows on the left state yous that the fractions inward the move yesteryear row as well as the bottom row should both add together upwards to 1.  The 5/6 on the move yesteryear tells yous that the fractions inward the correct column should add together upwards to 5/6.  Water is contained within each laid of thick dark lines.

This PDF file contains 42 of these puzzles.  And, hither are solutions.  Now that I'm looking at the solutions file, I realize that the end page of puzzles wasn't every bit scary every bit I made it out to be.  So, if yous produce the puzzles yourself, produce yourself a favor as well as conduct maintain a peek at how the solutions write upwards the end page earlier yous drive yourself insane trying to produce them the agency yous did all the previous pages.

These would brand a perfect review of fractions.  I flora myself making a lot of equivalent fractions every bit I was solving these myself.  I also had to produce lots of fraction add-on as well as subtraction inward my head.

Come dorsum tomorrow for the adjacent installment of puzzles.  Think of a agency yous could comprise ane of these inward your classroom?  Leave a comment below!
