First Always Scientific Discipline Workshop

A few weeks ago, I gave upwardly i of my Saturdays to attend a scientific discipline instruction workshop.  This is non something I ever sentiment I would do, but life has a agency of surprising you lot that way.  I'm a math instructor instruction a physical scientific discipline shape this year, in addition to you lot could definitely tell I am non inward my element.  I desire to experience to a greater extent than comfortable instruction science, then I decided a hands-on workshop was the agency to go!  There was also the prissy niggling bonus of a $50 stipend in addition to $1100 of complimentary scientific discipline supplies!  The workshop was run past times OERB.  If you're a instructor inward Oklahoma in addition to you lot haven't been to an OERB workshop, you lot demand to sign up!

There were exclusively 5 people (including me) assist the workshop, then nosotros all got to interact amongst each other a lot.  We did iv dissimilar labs in addition to received the supplies to create all of these labs amongst our students.  Some of them are to a greater extent than suitable to physical scientific discipline than others, but I tin strength out ever purpose lab materials for unrelated labs, too!

One big takeaway from assist my starting fourth dimension scientific discipline workshop: the agency I deed at a math workshop in addition to a scientific discipline workshop are real different.  At a math workshop, I pass a lot of fourth dimension taking notes close how I desire to modify ideas for my ain classroom.  At this scientific discipline workshop, I spent most of my fourth dimension quest questions close how the presenter used these activities inward her classroom.  I can't fifty-fifty laid out to think close modifying activities yet because I only don't conduct maintain plenty experience instruction scientific discipline YET.

For our starting fourth dimension lab, nosotros designed an experiment to determine the touching of elevation on current rate.  We used plastic tubing in addition to an aquarium see to fix our scenario.  We moved the beaker to dissimilar heights on the band stand upwardly to alter our elevation.

Each grouping calculated the current charge per unit of measurement for the dissimilar elevations.  This is intended to live an enquiry lab where students are given the materials in addition to asked to come upwardly up amongst their ain hypothesis in addition to experiment.

Our ii groups got dissimilar results, but nosotros both noticed the same trend.

We were also given supplies to permit students investigate the touching of diameter in addition to pipage length on current rate.

For our side past times side lab, nosotros got to intermission out pieces to model hydrocarbons.  Here's the link to the hydrocarbon modeling kit nosotros used from Mega Molecules.

I was assigned to construct a hydrocarbon amongst 5 carbons on it.  Looking at the nautical chart nosotros were given, I could read that my hydrocarbon incorporate 12 hydrogen atoms.  At first, I wasn't certain how this was going to move out.  Each carbon atom has iv connectors.  Five carbon atoms times iv connectors equals 20 hydrogen carbons.  Or then I sentiment BEFORE I started building.  Once I started connecting them I realized that each carbon was cable of iv bonds, but exclusively iii of those bonds could live used for hydrogen atoms because i of the bonds was needed to connect it to the other carbon atoms.  It was amazing to run across how the manipulative made this then much easier to see.

For our tertiary lab, nosotros worked to perform a distillation of grape flavored soda.

I took a lot of these photos then I tin strength out hollo back what the set-up is supposed to await similar if I ever create this lab amongst my students.

I was quite intrigued past times the fact that blowing air into a straw placed inward H2O that contained universal indicator fluid volition crusade the colouring to alter since carbon dioxide in addition to H2O react to shape carbonic acid.

In my group, my chore was to concur the plastic tubing inward the beaker.

Here's the beaker afterward the colouring alter :)

We used a Vernier Go Temp probe to collect our temperature data.

It was real cool to live able to run across the temperature marker off every bit the distillation proceeded.

For our final lab, nosotros mixed crude in addition to H2O inward a bottle in addition to proceeded to endeavour in addition to dissever them i time again.

We starting fourth dimension tried to dissever the H2O in addition to crude past times injecting to a greater extent than water.

It worked!

Then, nosotros used yeast to create the same thing.

I left the workshop feeling to a greater extent than confident close instruction science, then it was definitely worth it!

My married adult man was quite surprised when I came abode amongst ii GIANT tubs of supplies.  We were given plenty supplies to create all of the labs amongst our students.  We got plenty to create iii set-ups of each lab.

Here's the listing of what I received:

I've designated i of the cabinets inward my classroom every bit my scientific discipline cabinet.

Graduated Cylinders:

Medicine Cups, Vaseline, Universal Indicator Fluid, in addition to Glass Boiling Beads:

Last year, I bought these mini drawers at Dollar Tree.  They are working perfectly to concur all the minor items I received.  On overstep of the drawers is the digital thermometer I received.

The bluish laid of mini drawers has one-hole in addition to two-hole stoppers.

The orangish mini-drawers conduct maintain yeast in addition to carbohydrate inward them.

So far, the dark-green mini-drawers exclusively conduct maintain adapters inward them.

I'm pretty excited these MyChron timers.  I ordinarily conduct maintain my students purpose their phones every bit a timer, but sometimes that's a fleck every bit good much of a distraction for them.  ;)

These syringes are for the oil/water separation lab.

These plastic beakers conduct maintain already come upwardly inward handy inward my classroom.  When they are inward my cabinet, they are asset pipettes, straws, in addition to Grape Fanta.

These cups volition also come upwardly inward handy for numerous activities throughout the year!

Here are the hydrocarbon modeling kits I showed earlier.

Rings in addition to clamps in addition to wire mesh for band stands:

Fountain pumps:

Plastic tubs.  I'm then thankful for these because they volition allow me to create labs inward my non-science lab!

Ring stands:

I also received a laid of 100 mL drinking glass beakers.

Not shown inward these pictures are the distillation kits, graph paper, periodic tables, tubing, in addition to hot plates I received.  I'm starting to think I'm going to demand TWO scientific discipline cabinets!

The to a greater extent than experience I hit amongst instruction science, the to a greater extent than I realize why scientific discipline teachers conduct maintain labs to store all of their stuff!

Thank you, OERB!
