Black Box Activity

Earlier this week, I challenged my chemical scientific discipline students to a "Black Box Challenge." The sentiment is that they would last given containers where they could non come across the contents. They would accept to move their resources to exercise a hypothesis regarding what was inward the container. My goal was to hand my students a sense of savor of what it was similar for early on scientists doing atomic question without beingness able to come across the atoms they were theorizing about.

My students worked inward 5 groups. Each grouping received a recording canvass where they listed their hypothesis as well as their reasoning.

I didn't accept whatsoever literal dark boxes sitting around, as well as then I decided to move the film canisters (affiliate link) that I purchased early on this twelvemonth for our density challenge lab.

My husband helped me to opened upwards the celluloid canisters as well as pack them amongst goodies to last hypothesized about.

We filled 10 dissimilar canisters for this activity. Here's a peek within a few of them.

Air. Or, every bit my students declared, "Empty!"

Tile Spacers (affiliate link). This i threw all of my students for a loop. It turned out that none of them had e'er heard of tile spacers before. I purchased these tile spacers to brand a positive/negative game for my math concepts class. I've never got around to making the game, though... Maybe I'll accept to add together it to my summertime projection list!

Bingo Chips (affiliate link). One grouping mistook these for coins.

Foam Cube. I purchased these foam cubes from Dollar Tree a few years agone to plough into dice. I alone used a few, as well as then I simply accept them sitting inward my foam die tub doing nothing. I loved hearing kids ground almost what fabric the cube was made of afterwards they decided it must last a cube.

Cotton Ball. Several groups sentiment this was a crumpled slice of newspaper instead.

Pom Poms. One grouping called these fuzz balls. Another grouping sentiment this canister held pinkish as well as dark-green slime.

Rubberbands.

Not pictured were a marble, 2 dice, as well as some paperclips.

I stuck a post-it complaint to each canister amongst a give away on it to proceed my students' guesses organized. The post-it notes didn't stick to the celluloid canisters really well, as well as then I ended upwards taping them on.

I told students that they could move whatsoever resources inward the classroom to exercise their hypothesis. The alone matter they couldn't exercise was opened upwards the container.

And, this is how I learned that cherry as well as bluish celluloid canisters are non genuinely opaque. They move quite translucent when you lot house them adjacent to a prison theater mobile telephone phone flash light.

Note to Self: Invest inward a educate of dark celluloid canisters for adjacent time. Look at how easily you lot tin come across the rubberbands below!

Even amongst the assist of their prison theater mobile telephone phone lights, they did nevertheless accept to exercise some hypothesizing. The lite gave them an sentiment of what was inside, but they had to apply what they were seeing to previous experiences to write their hypothesis.

My students actually enjoyed this activity, as well as they were DYING to know what was inward the canisters.

After all of the groups were finished, nosotros did a reveal. Each grouping shared what they sentiment was inward canister 1. Then, nosotros opened canister 1. None of the groups got all 10 right thank you lot to those pesky tile spacers!

If you lot desire the file for this activity, I accept uploaded it here.
